1st XI Cherwell Div 4 fixture.

Mills up in the clouds

The Mills prepared for game day 6 with a week of winter weather which they may be more accustomed to in preparation for an indoor game.
The visitors seemed keen off the team coach, Mayho leading other fitness fanatics, Claridge & Kelly in an extended warm up. Such was the aggression of the warm up that Lefort would pull up, straining a hamstring, something the Mills men are more used to in the build up to a long away day than on the day.
Mills won the toss and elected to bowl.
70% fit, although the still sharp Lefort opened, bowling good areas from the off with his strike partner Dre Madden. The two wouldn’t take long to strike, Lefort having Marsh caught behind for 2 and Madden trapping? Robinson caught before wicket for a duck. At 2-2 Mills looked good, although Marston skipper, Wareham seemed to relish the challenge, mistaking Dre Madden for Pooch Madden, the outspoken batsman was here to mark his territory. Some cultured stroke play saw the introduction of Garrett, the spinner took a couple of balls to get used to bowling with 8 jumpers on although settle in he did. Banger Garrett dried up the run rate working with the newly introduced Burney, the two would pose questions of Wareham & Beale although the two seemed to have the answers. Burney, unusually relaxed with an opposition partnership building would make the break through, bowling Wareham, although the specifics didn’t reach the press box, it seemed the Mills men wished the opposition skipper well and congratulated him on a good batting performance on his way off the field. Next man out, Slade seemed keen on making the most of his time in the middle, the batsman spent longer walking out and waiting round than batting, bowled for 0 by Burney after facing just the two balls. The very next over Beale fell for 12, caught behind off the bowling of Garrett. In no time the Mills men turned the game with Marston 66-5. The experienced Graveson and counter attacking Toovey built again until Toovey was trapped in front for 16 off Burney, Mistry & Robinson would too depart, both for 0 and bothcaught behind off Burney. It would take something special to remove Graveson, Kelly didn’t help dismiss rumours that he is the ghost of cricket past, 843 years of age and the inventor of the sport when he predicted the play, moving Claridge in the right spot to end Graveson’s aggressive innings of 1 from 39. A less exciting caught and bowled ended the Marston innings on 88, a great result from 66-2.
Mills had the worst possible start with Haselgrove removed LBW first ball to a ball that pitched on and would be going onto hit middle stump, Haselgrove was visibly stunned to have received such a good straight ball first up based on his reaction. Garrett seemed to be getting going, beautifully caressing one through the covers although Toovey would strike back, having one nip back to the Mills all-rounder, bowling Garrett for 4. Hare didn’t quite find his flow, bogged down by the tight bowling of Robinson he would chip an easy catch to cover to move the Mills onto 45-3, while the Mills were making hard work of it they were still on top. A scare came when two plumb LBWs saw the back of Burney, 30 and Dove, 0 pushing the Mills to 56-5, a little more precarious. The experience of Claridge and the flowing Mayho who was now reproducing his form he established in the 1997 season would see the Mills home without suffering further loss.
With the Mills benefiting from weather over the last two game days and favourable results elsewhere, the result sees the Mills top of Division 4.
Next week the side will take on Charlbury at home Kelly will be at the ground to take palm readings from 10am.
Rumours are that Garrett has booked that day to go jumper shopping, Lefort will be taking more injections and Haselgrove is working on his seam bowling, making the trio unavailable.
