Seamers on song in the Vale

Mills spent the lead up to match day 11 on emergency team building events after skipper Burney called their dropped points on match day 10 “unacceptable”.

With heavy rain on the build up to the match the travelling Mills side were faced with a green soft track although dry conditions, something keeper Mayho didn’t anticipate with the Liverpool Echo reporting the keeper playing the “rain card” when he was seen out in the early hours of Saturday morning at a Liverpool nightclub.
Mills didn’t show hesitation when opting to bowl first when they won the toss.
Lefort & Madden opened up for the travelling side, hitting their straps early on and wouldn’t wait long to strike, Lefort finding the edge of a rather loose Cummings shot straight to keeper Mayho for 5. Vale skipper Darley met Cardy at the crease and the two began building the home side’s innings, testing the patience of the opening bowlers who continued to probe off stump. It was Lefort who struck with a classic Dre Madden “fuk’n seed” to clean bowl Cardy for 3, when Owen fell for the same fate for 2 the visiting side looked well on top. Delport replaced the disciplined Madden with the South African apparently feeling “ready” having spent the Friday night sleeping in his new hot hatch, the import has been spending wildly having triggered run based bonuses within his Mills contract in recent weeks. Butcher and Darley had now built the basis for a partnership, waiting patiently for the bad balls to put away, of which there were few.
With skipper Burney happy to have Haselgrove back in the side, he opted to charitably give the part time chucker an over, Butcher, aware of the spinners track record attempted to take the over for 86, a slight greedy 28 over the spinners average economy, it was this greed that led to his demise, playing one shot too many with the ball finding his edge which was brilliantly caught by Garrett dismissing Butcher for 10.
Cockroft replaced the spinner who had complained of fatigue from his long one over spell. Cockroft didn’t take long to break through, nicking off Bell into the hands of Mayho for 2. At the other end, Delport was bowling to plans, sending the message to Haselgrove to push back who grabbed the top edge of Howe-Davies attempting to hook the South African. Garrett grabbed Allen's edge off the bowling of Cockroft for 2. The impressive seamer then went onto take the key wicket of Darley, who chipped the ball to Dre Madden who was so excited to take the catch the burly seamer all-rounder incorporated the chicken dance into his grab removing the home captain for 21. With Kelly introduced the wily spinner removed Barksfield (8) and Owen (10), caught and bowled and LBW respectively.
Chasing 73 to win Haselgrove wasted no time, displaying all sorts of timing on his one shot to hit some lusty blows, the visitors had reached 50 within the first 6 overs. Haselgrove was removed though, trying something new, a block which he got all wrong after lack of practice, removing the striker for 34 off 23. Delport joined Burney who both steered the ship home without further loss and only a couple of minor scares, leaving them 8 and 27 not out respectively.

Next week the Mills travel to Brackley who are due to be without Mayho, who’s going back on strike, Devaney, who is being taken into intensive care following excessive nose bleeds and Kelly who has been offered a coaching role at the Essex Eagles.
