Minster Lovell

18 July 2020 - Away

1st XI Cherwell Div 3 fixture.

Burford Rd derby delight

The long wait for the season to start came to an end this Saturday with the Mills making the short journey to local rivals Minster. The wait was too short for some though with Cockroft unavailable due to a burst bicep implant, speaking before the game he mentioned he had “no regrets” undergoing the life changing cosmetic surgery. The line-up also fended off late rumours that Dove was unavailable due to his Friday night pub-crawl.

Mills won the toss, Burney, having received only bowl first feedback from his team decided to do just the opposite.
The Mills started slowly with Minster openers Mutton and Smith finding good areas from the off. Burney & Haselgrove did find their way though, with their trademark quick singles and telepathic communication began slowly increasing the scoring. Struggling to break the shackles, Haselgrove looked to injure Mutton out of the attack, much to the amusement of the locals who how tough Mutton is having lifted weights in the pre-season with Cockroft and his hulk like bicep.
Just as the Mills seemed to be over the initial threat Smith struck, removing Burney for 9.

The wicket brought head of youth Cricket and serious cricket model, Tilley to the crease. A seriously restricted youth cricket programme has meant that the only shot taught so far was the leave, Tilley didn’t disappoint his fans and students showing exactly how to execute the shot, the Oxfordshire veteran displayed the leave on line, the leave on length and even the leave on off stump while imitating a forward defence, this performance seeing his demise, removed by Smith on 1.

Garrett and Haselgrove built, exerting pressure on Minster for the first time in the day. It would take the introduction and doosra from mystery spinner Ebsworth to remove Haselgrove for a hard hitting 28. The Cricket loving Mayho was the next man in, playing a delightful shot over mid-on, something that the coaches have confirmed he’s been working on all winter. His stay was brief however, trapped LBW for 5.

This wicket brought Twitch streamer, Hare to the crease. At the other end Garrett was making the tricky wicket look easy, taking the attack to the bowlers with a superb mix of control and power taking the allrounder past 50, this, the first time 6 years Garrett has not been carrying a knee injury.

With the pair going nicely and looking to build up to a big score Garrett fell, bowled for 66 off the bowling of the impressive Mattinson.
Dre Madden joined Hare, with the game perfectly placed for his onslaught, he couldn’t quite find rhythm coming and going for 3. With Hare missing his pal Garrett and seeing few sweep opportunities he soon departed. Dove and Delport played some nice strokes to keep the scoreboard ticking, both unlucky to see fine strikes caught for 9 and 2 respectively. Kelly, literally kept the scoreboard ticking with partner Lefort to finish the score on 171.

With work to do, a new look opening partnership started proceedings Lefort and Delport took a few balls to find their radar but soon were on top of the batsmen, Delport the first to strike, trapping Mattinson LBW for 4. The dangerous and free flowing Mersh was the next to go, smartly caught by Burney at mid-wicket. Lefort then ripped through Minster’s top order, Spearman, Edsworth and Tinsley all without troubling the scorers, this spell superbly supported by Delport at the other end. Mills taking 8-5 through this spell. The introduction of the spinners saw Garrett continue his fine performance, removing Mannix for 3. Minster skipper Merriman showed a brief display of his quality and timing before finding the camera friendly Hare on eh boundary, Hare adjusting to movement without wearing a headset.

Minster continued to threaten and show their depth with Smith striking the ball nicely before falling to the mild mannered Burney for 26.

Kelly moped up the tail to hand Mills 25 points on their return to action.
