East Oxford

22 August 2020 - Away

1st XI Cherwell Div 3 fixture.

Missed Mubasher chances cost Mills

Match day 6 saw the Mills travel to Appleton, the temporary ground of East Oxford. The toss was won by the home side, who elected to bat first on a slightly damp looking track.
The Travelling side looked a little off pace in the early stages with Mayho, who had travelled to the Cowley road ground eagerly anticipating the Cowley Road social afterwards. Hare, eager to finish a stream ahead of the game in order to get his Twitch followers up. Burney who appeared to have splinters in his hands after building a “small city” of furniture, it is rumoured the fair handed Burney did not know what a Phillips screw driver was at the start of the week.
The East Oxford openers got off to a steady start, with both Lefort & Lewis hitting challenging spots from the off, testing the hosts’ judgement.
The lateral movement proved a challenge too for keeper Mayho, who was struck on the finger early into the innings, forced to be replaced by the ever eager Dove. Mayho did return to the field to support his team, fielding at fine leg, where, as a complete coincidence a 12 pack of beer was found empty along with 2 packs of cigarettes, Mayho spoke after the game of his enjoyment at fielding at fine leg “I really enjoyed it down there, I felt like I could fully appreciate all the game”
It was Lefort who first struck, beating Mughal to bowl the opener for 10. The introduction of Garrett paid instant dividend, removing Hamid, the spinner so dizzy from the night before not realising he was holding the ball differently to his normal grip generated genuine turn on the ball. When Garrett removed Ayyaz for 0 in the same way, supported by Burney at the other end dismissing Hussain, Mills looked on top.
East Oxford then begun to fight back, led by Hassan, the wicket keeper batsman, after looking a little at sea initially was keen to test his hitting strength and the short Appleton boundaries. Launching into the Mills spin attack Hassan seemed to find the boundary at will, he was given a life or two along the way to an impressive 134, who amassed 116 runs only in boundaries. At the other end Mills continued to make inroads, Kelly removing Quershi, Burney running out Ahmed, Garrett bowling Butt and Lewis taking his first Mills wicket, bowling Imran.
It would take the introduction of Madden to remove Hassan, the seamer had the centurion dropped from his first ball and then bowled him on his third after setting him up with a 6 ball the delivery before. His very next ball saw the end to the East Oxford innings, trapping Mardan LBW 1st ball to leave Dre Madden on a hattrick in the next game.
The Mills reply started well, 1st ball being hit for 4, with Burney for anyone who didn’t know him better would say he seemed riled up. His initial bright start came to a very quick end, removed the following over for a brisk 11. Garrett joined Haselgrove and the pair looked to steady the ship, although it was the removal of Garrett closely followed by Dove that really seemed to take the wind out of the chase. Hare joined Haselgrove and the two steadied the ship, giving the opportunity for Hare to show off his slog sweeps. When Hare was bowled by Ali for 11 the Mills collapse didn’t seem far away, Mayho bowled for 0, Madden bowled for 7. Slater and Lewis provided a counter punch hitting some nice boundaries to mount a stand, although when Slater was removed plumb LBW for a high scoring 21 the Mills innings was not far away from an end, finishing with Lefort caught for 5.
After the game the Mills held crisis talks after losing the game, with Kelly seen preparing “Burney out” banners in the week. Speaking to the press Kelly mentioned “he was 100% behind the incumbent” although he was seen holding a banner at the time which read “3 F***ing overs! Do you know who I am”
